HELPFUL TIPS: BEDS – SLEEP WELL!!!

BED. . a place where most of us spend more than 1/3rd* of our lives – most of us never give a thought on how one should sleep, how comfortable the Bed needs to be, it’s size, height, density, all are mostly ignored.

*Note: 1/3rd = average sleep/laying time, in a life span of 50-60 years;

Sleep is that period of time, when the body is given time to rejuvenate, to try and cope of what was lost during the day’s work; according to a Japanese Scientist – during the sleep, the body is almost dead – so more no. of hours that one sleeps, one’s life span increases – well this may be a myth – but the fact remains, Sleep is very important and thus what you sleep on becomes one of the Most Important factors;
How a Bed needs to be, is completely dependant on specific individual(s), using the Bed, however general guidelines shall make sure you sleep well, and wake-up healthier;

Listed below, are just a few points, worth consideration, while buying Beds or getting them manufactured:
1. SIZE: Most Important factor – make sure the Bed is of right size – if one is taller than an average human – he/she should not feel shy (out of place) to ask for a longer bed – this should be as simple as asking your tailor to keep the trouser length longer; if the Bed is Not long enough – one may either end-up sleeping with folded legs, which will disturb the Blood flow to the end of the toe, due to bent knees – or one may get a sprain in the neck, in order to keep the legs straight;
2. WIDTH: Suite yourself – like the length, this too is one of the important aspects – especially when it’s about two people sleeping on a bed – be it a couple or siblings or anyone for that matter – if the Bed is too narrow – one may enter into a mid—night argument on “how much space, you occupy”. Contrarily, if the Bed is too wide – especially for married couples – this may be one of the reasons, for lack of communication; on an average, a person requires a dimension which is equal to one and half times of one’s body width – this allows one to sleep flat and/or turn sideways comfortably;
3. HEIGHT: Not a primary factor, yet height of the bed plays a good role on how you feel while sleeping or how you wake up; a low height bed may look very trendy, but may cause a disturbed sleep due to height ceiling above – a Tall sleeping height, is good for sleep, however if one, by any chance, falls off the bed – chances of injuries are higher; an optimum height for a bed (including the mattress) is 450-500mm (18”-20”); having said the above, it is worth noting that, a low height bed is good for a bedroom with lower height;
4. Choice of Mattress: This choice shall decide on how you would spend rest of your day – a mattress that spoils one’s posture while sleeping, may give a back-ache for the day or a permanent issue; select a Mattress which is not too soft (sink-in types) – these type of mattresses may give one a very bouncy and exciting feel (the Tuck-in type) – however shall spoil the back posture by making one sleep in an concave position; again a too hard mattress will not be comfortable and may give you sleep deprivation; there is no norm for this, but one needs to select what best suits him/her; few countries like India use Woollen Mattresses, which are very healthy – however need revamping every year – while coir mattresses are unhealthy and may attract bed-bugs – however artificial fibre mattress from a good brand is sure to be ergonomically designed;
5. Pillow: similar to Mattress, the Pillow too needs to be of one’s choice – a huge variety of pillows are available – from the one made of Feather to woollen – soft tuck-inn types to hard-rock types – ergonomic ones to specially designed ones – pillows which support the neck & spine well and give comfort to the ears & head should be suitable; some people also use two pillows for their comfort adjustment;
6. Material: Coming back to Beds – one needs to make sure that his/her bed is made to last – available in market, are beds, which look very attractive (in looks & price) however may last only for couple of years; then there are beds which start Squeaking in few months; also beds which are very sturdy (made of Metal) however aesthetically do not give the warmth, one requires, one his/her way to bed; olden days Beds used to be made of Wood – with great workmanship and high quality Joinery – keeping them user friendly, attractive, sturdy and long lasting – today one may still opt for a bed which is made with wooden frame (carcass) with a finishing surface of choice – since a Good Wooden Bed is hard to find and may ‘Bore A Hole’ in the pocket;
7. Have you heard, your parent’s (or may be Grand Parents) wishing you “Sleep Tight”, when you go to sleep – ever wondered what they meant? Well, very few of us know that ancient times, Beds use to have Poles on all four corners, with strings attached to them – this was done to make sure that the Bed covers are kept stretched and Tight, when one goes to sleep – by pulling the strings one would adjust the tension on the bed sheet; this would make one sleep ‘Tight’;
8. There were those beds, too available, which had a Net around it – suspended from the top-centre – this was done for a Collapsible Net – not only keep privacy, but to make sure that the mosquitoes away;
9. Placement: the Bed needs to be placed on a stable surface, like the floor – do not go for beds with castors as a permanent solution – this may cause a nuisance, in case of any activity on the bed, which requires a lot of moving or shaking; also one must make sure that all legs are levelled well – one would not prefer a diagonally rocking bed – which is also noisy; use of PVC Buffers shall take care of the undulations on the floor;
10. Avoid Beds with Sharp Corners – remember that there are chances of hurting yourself or your loved ones, during a visit to the washroom in deep sleep;
11. Also avoid any type of gimmicks to the beds – a designer Bed with a poking headrest – may look very good but will discourage sitting posture; a bed with a cantilevered edge, will disturb the seating position, especially when one just wakes up – plus this again just ads to looks and doesn’t serve any purpose;
12. Beds with back lights are a good idea – not just for aesthetics – but for possible reading-before-sleep;
13. Beds lit at the edge below – too create good mood (if lit not Too Bright) and also act as a foot light;
14. Shape: Last but not least, Round & Oval Beds look very good but then need to be large enough to be used – i.e. circumscribed around the needed rectangular space;

The above list may be long but is yet not exhaustive – H3 Synergy has put in a lot of research, so a to provide a simple guideline to a layman – one may add to our ideas and knowledge, by commenting on personal experiences and feedbacks;
Never the less, H3 Synergy hopes the information makes a healthier difference in your life – watch this space for more – until then “Sleep Well”

Helpful Tips – Villa / Bungalow Construction & Finishing

  1. Structural:

1.1.        The Building Structure shall be in First Class RCC Frame Structure – preferably made with Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) and use of Tor Steel of relevant thicknesses;

1.2.        Shuttering to be in Metal for most areas, except the curved portion can be done in Flexi Ply;

1.3.        Curring of the RCC components is a Must;

1.4.        No Honey Combing should be visible – in case honeycombing occurs, the same needs to be sealed with Rich Cement Mortar;

  1. Civil & Finishing (Exterior & Interior):

2.1.        Brick is out of date – use Fly Ash Block – preferably of 200mm thickness – these are not only Green – Eco-friendly, but also Insulating – if Hollow Blocks are used one may achieve a temperature difference of min. 7* C while solid block shall give about 5* temperature difference, between outside ambient & interiors;

2.2.        External Plaster should be 18mm thk. Cement Plaster;

2.3.        Internal Plaster needs to be 12 mm thk. Gypsum Plaster (Saint Gobain – Gyproc Plaster) – this too helps strength of wall & is an insulation material;

2.4.        Terraces, toilets & balcony / veranda need to be water proof in Brick Bat Coba with 6” to 8” watta (top cover);

2.5.        External Finish can be in Stone tiles of 12mm thickness or similar ceramic tiles are also available – use of granite, and other local stones is also good depending of design choice;

2.6.        Economical option is Exterior Texture Paint with groves;

2.7.        Modern homes also use ACP (Aluminum Composite Panels) but that will give a very commercial / office look;

2.8.        Terrace needs to be finished with bright tiles, may be simple 1’x1’ white ceramic tiles or mosaic tiles; this is reflective and avoids heat absorption;

2.9.        Interior Paint on ceiling & walls should be Acrylic Emulsion Paint – after the gypsum plaster has completely dried – suggest apply Oil Bound Distemper during finishing and then paint the walls after a Year;

2.10.     Flooring options: 24” x 24” Vitrified tiles has huge choice and is most economical – next is 1M x 1M Vitrified Tiles which is comparatively expensive; One can use Marble or Granite as per convention and long-lasting choice; Italian Marble in flooring will need to be Maintained; Artificial Marbles  have a huge choice, they are expensive but look good – however they may dull out in next 8-9 years; Children Bedroom may be floored in sports flooring materials available in market – Master bedroom may be floored with Laminated floor or comparatively expensive true-wood floor – but these are not easy to maintain; Use of Wall-To-Wall carpet in Indian Homes need to be avoided;

2.11.     Kitchen & Toilet Platforms need to be in solid granite stone or in modern “Corian” material – advantage of expensive but good material like Corian is that you will get a Joint free platform – no joints, means no specie for bug / insects to make home – CLEAN;

2.12.     Kitchen Platform storage should be done with SS Trolleys on telescopic channels; front shutters should be in Marine Ply with laminate on all both sides and edge bound with PVC Edge binding;

2.13.     Windows & Glass doors in extreme climate region are suggested to be in Double Glazing, i.e. 6mm-12mm-6mm or any similar combination; this will keep the heat/cold out from Fenestrations – Frames shall be in Aluminium with Anodising; wooden frames for doors & windows is also good, the same should then be Duco Painted for long life; Wood needs to be Seasoned Teak or Miranti free of knots & warps and thick sections;

2.14.     Main door frame should be made-out-of atleast 8” x 4” thickness and internal doors 6” x 3”, while the Main door can be in panel or solid but of min. 40 mm thk., and internal door of 30mm thk.;

2.15.     Cills& Jambs need to be in Granite or any other Hard Stone;

2.16.     All gaps & joints between windows, doors, cills, etc. need to be sealed with Silicon

2.17.     All door hardware need to be in Brass – handles can be in chrome finish;

2.18.     Use of Glass can be done virtually everywhere – 12mm thk. Toughened glass for partitions between areas, 18 mm thk. Toughened glass for Dinning Table and other table tops with beveled / rounded edges; glass where privacy is required can be stuck with frosted glass films – suggest to use films and not chemical frosting – this will give the flexibility of changing the film after 5 years – chemical frosting is permanent and gets patchy after few years;

2.19.     Decorative glass can be used in ceiling, flooring, partitions, panels, wardrobes, beds, units, etc.;

2.20.     Toilets can be planned with opaque Glass Partitions too, so as to save space and give more light and ventilation

2.21.     Toilets can have Glass Basins too, which can not only make things look clean but shall also make a compact bathroom look spacious;

2.22.     Walls can be panelled with Veneer with Melamine polish, Laminate with Ply backing; some areas, especially entrance, lounges, living areas can be clad with Italian Marble;

2.23.     Toilets should have flooring to slope – avoid use of large slabs of flooring material, if the same is large, it should be in natural material like marble or granite so that slope can be created; regular Vitrified tiles are slippery, Matt Finish Vitrified / ceramic tiles are good for wet areas’ flooring;

2.24.     Toilet dado can be in Large Format Ceramic / Vitrified tiles, Glass Mosaics, etc.

2.25.     False ceiling can be done in Gypsum with GI Framing (Gypsteel) of Saint Gobain make; decorative false ceiling can be with wooden joists, veneer panels, glass, decorative light fixtures, etc.;

Did You Know?

In continuation to our Blog Post on Vastu . . . (https://h3synergy.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/vastu-science/)

Did You know? . . . that the Egyptian Pyramids, All the Temples in India and world over, Ancient Palaces & Forts are all designed on the Basis of Vastu Science;

They were designed with the knowledge of Vastu Science not only to make sure they are planned in the right direction, but also for the reason to use the Best of Natural Resources for the said structure;

The Egyptian Pyramids make sure they even use the Moon & the Stars as a source of lights during night – this was done with help of intense calculative planning in planning via-ducts which starts at the top surface and go linear right inside, at a particular angle;

Temples, in India – used a lot of Jarookhas (perforated grills) to let in Light & Air – this was primarily done in the wind direction or within the temple areas to keep them well ventilated and in-turn hygienic;

The Courtyards in the centre of the structure, helped the ingress & egress of the cool & hot air – respectively (this is a very deep topic and we shall soon come up with an independent post on Courtyard Architecture)
